Position Summary:
Arkansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) invites applications for a Mental Health Clinician. This full-time staff position is open to a master's- level licensed mental health professionals. The appointment will be a 12- month appointment.
The Mental Health Clinician will provide individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, case management, and prevention-focused outreach for Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) students. Doctoral-level candidates who are licensed psychologists may also conduct and interpret psychometric testing for academic accommodation considerations.
This position is housed within the A-State College of Veterinary Medicine and reports directly to the Associate Dean for Admissions, Students, and Research. The clinician will work collaboratively with the A-State Wilson Counseling Center, an International Accreditation of Counseling Services (IACS) accredited center staffed by 6 licensed professional counselors as well as interns and practicum students.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provide clinical services, including consultation, assessment, and individual counseling for DVM students.
- Provide case management, facilitate referrals to internal and external resources, and coordinate follow-up.
- Provide therapeutic crisis intervention.
- Conduct and interpret and/or facilitate referrals for psychometric testing (doctoral-level psychologists only) for accommodation considerations and work alongside the Access and Accommodations Service in helping determine reasonable accommodations during DVM student education.
- Support incoming DVM students and participate in orientation programming.
- Collaborate with the Wilson Counseling Center to offer workshops, outreach events, and wellness initiatives tailored to the needs of veterinary students.
- Provide training and consultation for DVM faculty and staff on relevant mental health topics, including suicide prevention, trauma response, burnout, professional identity development, and supporting distressed students.
- Develop and deliver psychoeducational programs aimed at reducing mental health stigma and promoting resilience and wellbeing in the DVM community.
- Contribute website content, written materials, and messaging related to mental health and wellbeing.
- Attend key CVM events and maintain visibility within the viability and faculty community.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
• Understanding of both clinical and developmental issues confronting university students and ability to implement comprehensive services to address these issues.
• Understanding and competency for conducting individual psychotherapy with a diverse population.
• Ability to establish rapport quickly with clients within a therapeutic context.
• Ability to provide crisis intervention to assist students and facilitate on-call crisis response.
• Excellent judgment, problem solving, sophistication in thought and applicable knowledge of the myriad of factors leading to the resolution of psychological problems.
• Proficiency in public speaking and leading group discussions.
• Excellent written, verbal, administrative, and interpersonal skills.
• Excellent planning and organizational skills (e.g. file management, time management).
• Knowledge and ability to interpret and apply professional standards & relevant laws for counseling centers.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and maintain confidentiality within legal and institutional guidelines.
• Familiarity or willingness to learn university policies and procedures, student issues and concerns, and campus issues.

Minimum Qualifications:
An earned Master's degree in Social Work.
Licensed or license-eligible in Arkansas as LMSW, LCSW.
Preferred Qualifications:
Clinical experience providing psychotherapy to young adults or university students.
Clinical experience working with professional students, medical trainees, veterinary professionals, or comparable high-stress populations.
Experience developing or leading psychoeducational programs, workshops, or community outreach.
Understanding of the mental health needs and stressors uniquely affecting veterinary students and the veterinary profession.
