Mental Health and Wellness Specialist
Department: Player Performance
Primary Population: Players and Staff
Status: Flex, Year-Round – Mandatory during NBA season
Travel: Periodically
On-Call: Yes – 24/7
Position Overview
The Mental Health and Wellness Specialist is a core member of the organization’s Medical and Performance team, responsible for delivering confidential, evidence-based mental health services to players and staff while supporting organizational wellness, crisis response, and continuity of care.
This role provides assessment, treatment, consultation, and clinical oversight, functioning within a complex, high-profile professional sports environment. The clinician maintains strong clinical boundaries while collaborating closely with medical, performance, and player development leadership.
In addition to direct clinical care, this role oversees a network of off-site mental health consultants, ensuring alignment, quality of care, and appropriate referral pathways.
Clinical Care Responsibilities
Provide individual assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for players and staff addressing mental health-related concerns, including:
Anxiety, depression, and mood disorders
Stress, burnout, and performance-related distress
Injury-related psychological responses
Relationship, family, and life-transition concerns
Identity, role, and career-transition issues
Deliver evidence-based treatment while maintaining confidentiality in nontraditional clinical environments.
Monitor clinical risk and treatment progress and coordinate care as needed.
Mental Health Emergency Response
Assist in drafting, maintaining, and executing the organization’s Mental Health Emergency Action Plan.
Serve in an on-call capacity during the competitive season, including practices and team activities.
Coordinate and support responses to mental health crises in collaboration with Medical leadership.
Demonstrate strong clinical judgment, flexibility, and composure during high-risk situations.
Referral & Continuity of Care
Facilitate referrals for:
Medication evaluation
Specialty or intensive mental health services
Substance use treatment
Couples or family therapy
Maintain and manage a trusted referral network.
Ensure continuity of care across internal and external providers.
Consultant Oversight & Program Coordination
Oversee a team of off-site mental health consultants, including:
Alignment with organizational standards and expectations
Case coordination and referral pathways
Communication with Medical leadership as appropriate
Support onboarding, role clarity, and quality assurance for consultants.
Serve as the primary clinical point of contact for external providers.
Education, Prevention & Organizational Wellness
Deliver mental health education and awareness initiatives focused on:
Mental health literacy and stigma reduction
Holistic wellness and mind-body integration
Stress management, recovery, and sustainability
Provide consultation on organizational health, including:
Communication and interpersonal dynamics
Role clarity and time management
Leadership and management styles
Support a proactive, prevention-based approach to mental health across the organization.
Collaboration & Integration
Work closely with:
Director of Medical / Head Athletic Trainer
Performance and Player Development leadership
Coaching and operations staff (as appropriate)
Function as part of a multidisciplinary care team while maintaining clinical independence.
Navigate complex administrative systems with discretion and professionalism.

Requirements
Required Qualifications
Doctorate degree in Psychology.
Licensed to practice independently as one of the following:
Psychologist
Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
Licensed and in good standing in the team’s home market and all applicable jurisdictions or ability to obtain license.
Minimum 7 years of post-degree clinical experience with culturally and diagnostically diverse populations.
Ability to provide clinical services in nontraditional and high-visibility environments.
Preferred Qualifications
Substantial training or experience in sport psychology or mental performance.
Experience working with high-performance population
Experience delivering group education sessions, team presentations, and performance workshops.
Training or experience addressing team dynamics, culture, and organizational systems within high-performance environments.
Currently licensed and practicing in the State of Texas.
Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain an extensive professional network within the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area, including connections with mental health providers, sport performance professionals, and other high-performance specialists.
